Porvoo Jazz Festival

Words by Paul Dodson

If you find yourself at a loose end in Helsinki come mid-September, make your way east young man and take in some sublime sounds at the Porvoo Jazz Fest.

As Finland's second oldest city, Porvoo is a wonderful historic destination any old time of the year, but add the melodic musings of some of Finland's finest jazz musicians - and some great international acts to boot - and there's another layer to Porvoo's appeal come September.

For a treat, dress for warmth and jump on board the MS J.L.Runeberg from Helsinki and take in the Southern Finnish archipelago as you enjoy some pre-festival refreshments on board this beauty that's been plying these waters since 1912.

For those looking for a speedier, less scenic option, free buses will depart Helsinki for the festival and return after the last sax has hit its case.
